چکیده

Recent observations of nearby star forming regions have offered evidence that young brown dwarfs undergo a period of mass accretion analogous to the T Tauri phase observed in young stars. Brown dwarf analogs to stellar protostars, however, have yet to be definitively observed. These young, accreting objects would shed light on the nature of the dominant brown dwarf formation process, as well as provide ideal laboratories to investigate the dependence of the accretion mechanism on protostellar mass. Recent near infrared surveys have identified candidate proto-brown dwarfs and characterized low mass protostars in nearby star forming regions. These techniques allow near infrared spectra to diagnose the effective temperature, accretion luminosity, magnetic field strength and rotation velocity of young low mass stars across the stellar/substellar boundary. The lowest mass proto-brown dwarfs (M<40 MJup), however, will prove challenging to observe given current near IR observational capabilities.

We present optical spectroscopy of three brown dwarf candidates identified in the first 1% of the DENIS sky survey. Low resolution spectra from 6430–9150Å show these objects to have similar spectra to the uncertain brown dwarf candidate GD 165B. High resolution spectroscopy shows that one of the objects – DBD 1228-1547 – has a strong 2.3±0.05Å equivalent width absorption line of Li I 6708Å, and...

Dwarf Companion to the Nearby K Dwarf GJ 1048

We report the discovery of a probable L1 companion to the nearby K2 dwarf GJ 1048 using the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS). This source, 2MASSI J0235599-233120 or GJ 1048B, has 2MASS near-infrared colors and absolute magnitudes consistent with an early L dwarf companion with a projected separation of 250 A.U. The L1 spectral type is confirmed by far-red optical and low-resolution IR spectros...

The Best Brown Dwarf Yet?: A Companion to the Hyades Eclipsing Binary V471 Tau

We have carried out an analysis of about 160 eclipse timings spanning over 30 years of the Hyades eclipsing binary V471 Tauri that shows a long-term quasi-sinusoidal modulation of its observed eclipse arrival times. The O–Cs have been analyzed for the “light-time” effect that arises from the gravitational influence of a tertiary companion. The presence of a third body causes the relative distan...

A deep , wide - field search for substellar members in NGC 2264

We report the first results of our ongoing campaign to discover the first brown dwarfs (BD) in NGC 2264, a young (3 Myr), populous star forming region for which our optical studies have revealed a very high density of potential candidates 236 in < 1 deg2 from the substellar limit down to at least ∼ 20 MJup for zero reddening. Candidate BD were first selected using wide field (I, z) band imaging...
